THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH'S YEAR.
The 1st Ecumenical Council (325 AD) decreed that the Church's year should begin on September 1st. September was for Jews the beginning of the civil year (Exodus 12,2), the month of the gathering of fruit and the bringing to God of sacrifices of thanksgiving.
It was September, at the time of this feast that the Lord Jesus went into the synagogue in Nazareth, opened the Book of the Prophet Isaiah cap. 61,1 and read the words:" The Spirit of the Lord is on Me; because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour" (Luke 4,16).
