The Setting.
For those of us looking back in time, the setting was the ancient world. For people of that day, however, it was the 'modern' world. Greek was still used as the official trade language.
The power of the once great land of Greece had been seized by the Romans.
Greece had brought culture, wealth and advancement, immorality and self-indulgence.
Rome allowed the people to continue their religion as long as it did not conflict with the pagan worship.
"All roads lead to Rome" and Palestine had to bow the knee, if not the heart.
Nazareth had little of which to boast.
The main road between Egypt and the interior of Asia passed Nazareth at the foot of Tabor.
Bethleem was 100 Km away and King David was born here. He led the people to the height of power, and the great God of Israel promised that of David's line and in his town, a new king will be born to rule the world.
Herod's consultation with the chief priests has similarity the the legend about Moses, in which 'sacred scribes' warn Pharaoh about the imminent birth of one who will deliver Israel from Egypt.
The Pharaoh made plans to destroy him.
Herod, in turn, ordered the massacre of 14,000 infants.
