1st October, The veil of Our Lady
According to the orthodox tradition, Our Lady Mary, the Mother of God appeared in the church of Vlacherna in Constantinopol (Istambul) on 1st of October and was seen by St Andrew and Epiphanus (+936), during the rein of emperor Leon the Wise (886- 912).
This church was built by Pulcheria and her husband, emperor Marcianus (450-457)
In this church were preserved Mother of God's veil and Santa Camisa (Ene Braniște,Dicționar enciclopedic de cunoștințe religioase, Editura Diecezană, Caransebeș, 2001).
Sancta Camisa is an oblong piece of silk, a tunic, that Mary is reported to have worn during the Annunciation of Jesus’ birth and during her labor and delivery of Jesus.
King Charles the Bald gave the veil to the Chartres Cathedral in 876.
His grandfather, Charlemagne, had received it as a gift from the Byzantine Empress Irene, the wife of emperor Leon IV (797-802) the first woman to rule as emperor.
When tested in the twentieth century, the cloth contained pollen from first-century Palestine.
This piece of cloth is closely tied to the history of both Chartres Cathedral and the town of Chartres.
