IT'S NOT MUCH FUN TO EAT A LUKEWARM TRAY OF FOOD WITH A BLUNT KNIFE IN CRAMPED CONDITIONS, BASICALLY ON YOUR OWN - EVEN IF THERE ARE OTHER INMATES AROUND.
Of course. if you have a bit of money on your account, you can order food from the canteen to spice things up a bit. But it's not exactly a banquet! You're in prison... and the food is yet another one of those stark reminders of the fact.
There's not much motivation for partying, either, even if something's organised by the authorities or the chaplaincy.
Be that as it may, you do like to celebrate those minor victories: visiting rights, remission, someone's release, football matches, good news from outside, and so on. And celebrate you do, with the little you have. We all need food, celebrations and joy. That's what brings people together and gives us hope - puts some spice in our life! And of course the best party would be one that never ends.
THE FRUIT OF HOSPITALITY. One day Abraham and Sarah received a very special visit. "Please come to my tent; let me get you some food to give you strength before you leave" (Genesis 18:3)
Think: Important events in life are often marked by a meal.
What does eating together add to a meeting?
SAVING THE BEST TILL LAST. Jesus' first public act takes place in the presence of his mother and disciples. Jesus came to live among men and women (John 2).
Think:
Are we invited to the wedding feast, too? This is the weadding feast of the Lamb! (Revelation 19:1).
What place should we give our family and friends in our life decisions?
5,000 GUESTS FOR LUNCH! Jesus told his disciples to have the people sit down on the green grass, took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up toward heaven and blessed the food (Mark 6:39)
Think:
How can this story help us to understand the words of the Lord's Prayer "give us this day our daily bread"?
How can it help us understand Communion?
'TAKE THIS. IT IS MY BODY' (Mark 14:22)
Jesus took two traditional parts of the Pasover meal, the passing of bread and the drinking of wine, and gave them a new meaning, as His Body and Blood.
Instead of a spotless lamb on the altar, Jesus offered himself, the spotless Lamb of God, as a sacrifice that would forgive sin once and for all.
Jesus was the final sacrifice for sins, and His blood sealed the new agreement between GOD and us.
Now all of us can come to GOD through Jesus, in full confidence that God will hear us and save us from our sins.
