În Mersul pe apă vedem relațiile dintre spirit și Natura atât de modificate încât Natura poate fi făcută să facă orice dorește spiritul. Această nouă ascultare a Naturii nu trebuie, desigur, despărțită nici măcar în gând de ascultarea propriului spirit față de Tatăl Spiritelor. În afară de această condiție, o astfel de supunere din partea Naturii, dacă ar fi posibilă, ar duce la haos: visul malefic al Magiei provine din dorința spiritului finit de a obține acea putere fără să plătească acel preț.

 

Dacă suntem de fapt spirite, și nu descendenți ai Naturii, atunci trebuie să existe un punct (probabil creierul) în care spiritul creat chiar și acum poate produce efecte asupra materiei nu prin manipulare sau tehnică, ci pur și simplu prin dorința de a face acest lucru. Dacă asta vrei să spui prin Magie, atunci Magia este o realitate manifestată de fiecare dată când îți miști mâna sau gândești un gând. Și Natura, așa cum am văzut, nu este distrusă, ci mai degrabă desăvârșită prin servitute. (C.S.Lewis).
 

 

Jesus Walking on the Water (Matthew 14:22)
In the Walking on the Water we see the relations of the spirit and Nature so altered that Nature can be made to do whatever spirit pleases. This new obedience of Nature is, of course, not to be separated even in thought from spirit's own obedience to the Father of Spirits. Apart from that proviso such obedience by Nature, if it were possible, would result in chaos : the evil dream of Magic arises from finite spirit's longing to get that power without paying that price.

If we are in fact spirits, not Nature's offspring, then must be some point (probably the brain) at which created spirit even now can produce effects on matter not by manipulation or technics but simply by the wish to do so. If that is what you mean by Magic then Magic is a reality manifested every time you move your hand or think a thought. And Nature, as we have seen, is not destroyed but rather perfected by servitude.
