In urma acestor cuvinte, sultanul a poruncit sā fie decapitati copii domnitorului. Copilul s-a indreptat spre jertfā fārā retineri.
In vara anului 1720, Doamna Maria (Marica) a adus pe ascuns rāmāsitele domnitorului si le-a ingropat in Biserica Sfantul Gheorghe Nou din Bucuresti.
Virgil Draghiceanu a facut in 1914 senzationala descoperire a mormîntului voievodal.

August 16, 1714, the Sacrifice of the Brîncovens.
"I will not leave the Christian law, because I was born and lived in it, and I want to die in it!"
Because he refused to renounce the Christian faith, on August 15, 1714, the very day he turned 60, the Romanian ruler was beheaded. The same punishment was suffered by his four sons, together with the councilor Ianache.
Only in shirts, exhausted from suffering and pain, tied with chains, bareheaded and barefoot, the confessors of Christ were brought before Sultan Ahmed. At the sultan's request to renounce Christianity, Brancoveanu answered without hesitation: "I will not leave the Christian law, because I was born and lived in it, and I want to die in it!", and to his sons he said: "Sons, be men! We lost everything we had in this world. All we have left are our souls. Let's not lose them either, but let's bring them clean before the face of our Savior Jesus Christ. Let's wash our sins with our blood!".
Following these words, the sultan ordered the ruler's children to be beheaded. The first was Constantine, the eldest son. Stefan and Radu followed. When it was Matei's turn, the youngest boy, he started to cry. His father asked him to be like his brothers. The child went towards the sacrifice without hesitation. They followed Ianache Vācārescu, the good adviser of Brancovean and then the ruler, who made a big cross and said: "Lord, let Your will be done!".
Their bodies were thrown into the Bosphorus. They were taken out by some Christians and buried in great secrecy in a monastery in Halki, right next to Tarigrad.
In the summer of 1720, Lady Maria (Marica) secretly brought the prince's remains and buried them in the Church of St. Gheorghe Nou in Bucharest. He placed over the grave a stone adorned only with the country page, without any writing, and on top of it she placed a silver candle.
In 1914, Virgil Draghiceanu made the sensational discovery of the voivodeship tomb.
