John's message.
John's message demanded at least three specific responses:
1. Share what you have with those who need it.
2. Whatever your job is do it well and with fairness.
3. Be content with what you're earning.
John's message took root in unexpected places - among the poor, the dishonest, and even the hated occupation army.
Flavius Josephus, the Jewish historian, mentions John the Baptist imprisonment and execution by Herod Antipas, in his work "Antiquities of the Jews" Book 18, chapter 5,2 (AD 93-94):
"This is he that slew John the Baptist, the great man, the forerunner of Christ, being afraid lest he should raise a sedition among his people; for they all followed the directions of John, on account of the excellency of his virtue".
