THE PLACE OF ASCENSION WITH THE FOOTPRINTS OF JESUS. Forty days had now elapsed since the Resurection.
During those 40 days Jesus has been visibly present to human eyes, and had been touched by human hands:
1. First appearance of Jesus was to Mary of Magdala, when He said to her, "Mary!".
2. Jesus met the other women also, and said to them, "All hail!".
3. The 3rd appearance of Jesus was to Peter.
4. On the same day the 4th appearance was to Luke and Cleopas, on their way to a village named Emmaus.
5. Once more, for the 5th time on that eternally memorable Easter day, Jesus manifested Himself to ten of His disciples sitting together , with doors closed for fear of the Jews. Only one of the Apostles had been absent - Thomas the Twin.
6. A week passed, and the eleven were again assembled within closed doors. Jesus called Thomas, and bade him stretch forth his finger, and put it in the print of the nails.
7. The next appearance of the risen Saviour was to the seven of the Apostles by the Sea of Galilee; they dragged the net with 153 fishes. The happy meal ended in silence, and Jesus asked Peter:"Simon, son of Jonas, do you truly love me more than these?" (John 21,15) "Feed my lambs!"
8. More than 500 of His disciples collected at the given time with the eleven on a mountain in Galilee and Jesus gave them His last commands, to teach and baptize throughout all nations; He promised that He would be with them always.
9. A 9th appearance of Jesus is unrecorded in the Gospels, and is known to us from a single allusion in St. Paul: " He was seen of James... and at last of all He appeared to me also, as to the abortive- born of the Apostolic family"( 1 Corinthians 15,3).
The time had now come when His earthly presence should be taken away from them for ever, until He returned in glory to judge the world. He met them in Jerusalem, and as He led them with Him towards Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them, and was parted from them and a cloud received Him out of their sight. Between us and His visible presence, that cloud still rolls. But the eyes of Faith can pierce it; the incense of true prayer can rise above it; through it the dew of blessing can descend. Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit, a nearer sense of His presence. He promised to be with us always, even to the end of the world, and we have not found His promise fail. He is Emmanuel, which is, being interpreted, GOD WITH US.
