Q : Was Jesus' death a sham and his resurection a hoax?
A : The high degree of psychological stress in the Garden of Gethsemane caused a release of chemicals that broke the capillaries in the sweat glanda and released blood into sweat - hematidrosis - setting up the skin to be extremely fragile when Jesus was flogged.
Roman flogging was terribly brutal, consisting of 39 lashes of a whip of braided lether thongs with metal balls woven into them. The back would be so shredded that part of the spine was sometimes exposed by the deep cuts. The lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Many people would die from this kind of beating before they could be crucified due to loss of blood - hypovolemic shock - causing faintings and collapse.
Jesus could not have survived the gruesome rigors of crucifixion, much less the gaping wound that pierced his lung and heart. The idea that he somehow swooned on the cross and pretended to be dead lacks any evidential basis.
Roman executoners were grimly efficient!
Even if Jesus somehow lived through the torture, his ghastly condition could never have inspired a wordwide movement based on the premise that he gloriously triumphed over the grave. (Dr AlexanderMetherell.)
