Christians and Revenge - 'Love for Enemies' (Matthew 5:43)
- God : "Where is Abel?"
- Cain : "Am I supposed to look after my brother?" (Genesis 4:9)
The passage can be understood as describing the ancient rivalry between livestock farmers and crop growers.
But it can also be seen as a exploration of the origin of violence - both within us and between us - and our mutual responsibility towards God and others.
Jesus said :"Love your enemies, in order to become sons of God" ( Matthew 5:34)
The cancer of bitterness and hatred:
"Anger is a destructive emotion. It eats away at whatever peace you have, and in the end causes nothing but greater pain that you began with. It also makes it much harder for others to console you, when you're busy nursing resentment. It's not as if I don't have those seeds in me - I knew I do - but I'm not going to let other people water them.
It is a hard law : when an injury is done to us, we never recover until we forgive!
