St Apostle John - the poet, died on 26 Sept.100 AD, during the reign of Trajan.
The Gospel acording to John starts with an early Christian hymn about the World of God, the 'Cosmic Christ'.
E poetic in structure, with short phrases linked by 'staircase parallelism', in which last word of one phrase becomes the first word of the next :
John 1:1-5 "In the beginnings was the Word
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be throigh him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it".
1:10-11 "He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him".
1:14 "And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the as of the Father's only Son,
full of grace and truth".
We read it on Easter Night.
The Gospel narrative contains a series of 7 'signs':
1. Transformation of water into wine ( cap 2:1)
2. The cure of the official's son (cap 4:46)
3. The cure of the paralitic at the pool (cap 5)
4. The multiplication of bread (cap 6)
5. The walking on the water (cap 6)
6. The cure of the young man born blind (cap 9)
7. The raising of Lazarus (cap 11).
Interestingly, Jesus came for 'testimony' (cap 1:7),
portrays Jesus as if on trail throughout his ministry.
All testify to Jesus: John the Baptist, the Samaritan woman, scripture, his work, the crowds, the Spirit, and the disciples.
