The Eternal Miracle.
The awakening of the inner consciousness of power.
The Baptism.
Jesus looked up to and admired his handsome, fearless cousin and received with interest the reports of John's impressive success . The fashionable folk of the city were flocking out to the Jordan River to hear his denunciations. Some of them even accepted his demand for repentance and were baptised.
A day came when Jesus was missing from the carpenter shop.
John's reception of him was flattering and for the rest of the day Jesus was in a state of splendid exultation.
He was equipped by the Holy Spirit and proclaimed the Son of God.
The Temptations.
The night descended and with it came the doubts:
1. - The temptation of the material success: "You are hungry, here are stones. Make them into bread!"
But He had a good trade, he could do better than Joseph.
2. - "All these can be yours, if you will only compromise".
He could go the Jerusalem and enter the priesthood, a sure road to distinction.
3. - Or he might enter the public service and seek political leadership.
For 40 days the incessant fight went on.
Then came the faith that his spirit was linked with the Eternal, that God had sent Him into the world to do a work which no one else could do.
The youth carpenter stayed in the wilderness, a man came out... (Bruce Barton).
The beginning of Ministry.
Jesus takes up the words of John the Baptist although with a different meaning: in His ministry, the kingdom of God has already at hand.
