YOU have been marked, not only by your genetic background but also by the environment in which you were raised. The people who affirmed you gave you a positive view of other human beings. The people who put you down or belittled you have caused you to feel uncertain about yourself and others...
Genesis 1 tells us that God created living things to bring forth according to their own kind. Not only are we likely to look like our parents, but it is also inferred that we will respond to life as our parents did. But take heart. The Bible also says, "So God created man in His own image (Genesis 1:27). You were not only created in your parents' image, but also in God's.
Yes, you have your past, but also have God. Remember the clasic verse: " Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Cornthians 5:17).
You are not trapped with your old experineces and genes. You do have the capacity for change! You can be different!. But I won't kid you. You must take charge of your life! You must stop saying, "I'll never be different," and begin saying, "I can be different because of God's love working in me." If you've invited Christ into your life by baptism, confession, Holy Communion and all other Sacraments, you have been reborn and the Holy Spirit is working to help you become all that God wants you to be.
