AN AFRICAN CREED FROM ZIMBABWE.
"The seed is the word of God"; the seed (bread) is the face of Jesus in the Holy Communion, and Jesus is the image of the invisible God (Coloseni 1:15).
The 7th Council (Nicea, 787) discussed the human face of God ( the icon).
Black people have suffered for many years at the hands of white oppressors. African Christians have therefore pictured Jesus as a black Messiah. They do not mean that Jesus' skin was black, but that God sent Jesus as the Messiah/ liberator, to free all people from oppression. This"People's Creed" reflects the belief that God works to heal the divisions between races:
- I BELIEVE IN A COLOR-BLIND GOD, MAKER OF TECHNICOLOUR PEOPLE,
WHO CREATED THE UNIVERSE AND PROVIDED ABUNDANT RESOURCES TO BE SHARED EQUALLY AMONG ALL HIS PEOPLE.
- I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, BORN OF A HUMBLE GIRL,
WHO WAS RIDICULED, DESFIGURED, AND EXECUTED,
WHO ON THE THIRD DAY ROSE AND FOUGHT BACK;
HE STORMS THE HIGHEST COUNCILS OF MEN, WHERE HE OVERTURNS THE IRON RULE OF INJUSTICE;
FROM HENCEFORTH HE SHALL CONTINUE TO JUDGE THE HATRED AND ARROGANCE OF MEN.
- I BELIEVE IN THE SPIRIT OF RECONCILIATION;
- THE UNITED BODY OF THE DISPOSSESSED;
- THE COMMUNION OF THE SUFFERING MASSES;
- THE POWER THAT OVERCOMES THE DEHUMANIZING FORCES OF MEN;
- THE RESURECTION OF PERSONHOOD, JUSTICE , AND EQUALITY;
- AND IN THE FINAL TRIUMPH OF BROTHERHOOD. (Canaan Banana)
