Herod the tetrarch said: "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him" (Matthew 14:2).
This was a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Herod arrested John, bound, put him in prison and executed him because he feared that the Baptist's influence over the people might enable him to lead a rebelion (Josephus, Antiquities 18,5,2).
He experienced intrusive imagery, significant guilt, fear, and psychological torment after ordering the death of John the Baptist. He had nightmares and daydreams. Haunted by the Truth, the Baptist's spirit greatly troubled him.
Jews believed that Herod's later military disasters were God's punishment for his treatment of John.
