The Triumphal Entry.
A Roman officer galloping up to check on the disturbance at the Jerusalem's gate to Bethania. He has attended meny processions in Rome : the conquering general in a chariot of gold with wheel spikes flushing in the sun, followed by officers in polished armor. At the rear comes a ragtag procession of prisoners and slaves in chains, a living proof of what happens to those who defy Rome.
In Jesus' triumphant entry, the adoring crowd makes up the ragtag procession: the lame, the blind, the children, the pesants from Galilee and Bethany. And Jesus riding on the back of a baby donkey, a borrowed coat draped across its back-bone serving as his saddle. What manner of king was this? You could hear : "Hosanna!", "Hosanna!".
Jesus was singing Psalm 8, "Out of the mouths of babes and infants You have drawn a defence against your foes, to silence enemy and avenger..."
