St. George was a knight born in Capadocia, whose travels took him to Silene in Libya. The city was terrorized by a dragon, which the people placated by feeding it two sheep a day. When the sheep had all been eaten, the king ordered that the dragon should be given a human being, chosen by lottery. Finally, the fate fell on his daughter, and St. George found her waiting for her doom. When the dragon appeared, St George made the sign of the cross over it with his sword and then brought it down with a spear. 15,000 men were baptised with their wives and children, and the king constructed a church of our Lady Mary.
St George was tortured and beheaded during the Deocletian and Maximian persecutions in 303.
"I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit; and upon this charge
Cry God for Harry, England and St. George"(Shakespeare, Henry V, The cry of men of war).
