ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ON FASTING
Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works : If you see a poor man, take pity on him; If you see a friend being honoured, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful.
After facing much opposition for his teaching, Jesus is betrayed by Judas, disowned by the disciples, crucified and buried. Only two days before all these things happened (Mathew 26,1) Jesus tells THE PARABLE OF THE SHEEP AND GOATS – maybe to show that the human judgement on Him and others is irrelevant and GOD is the ultimate Judge…
“PHILEMON” is a personal letter of St. Apostle Paul to Philemon to plea for a slave, Onesimus who has stolen from his master and run away to Rome where he met Paul. Onesimus came to the faith in Christ. The letter is a masterpiece of grace and tact and a profound demonstration of the power of Christ and of the true Christian fellowship in action.
The younger son’s share of the estate would have been one-third, with the older son receiving two- thirds (Deuteronomy 21,17). In most cases he would received this at his father’s death, although fathers sometimes chose to divide up their inheritance early and retire from managing the estate. What is unusual here is that the younger one initiated the division of the estate; this showed arrogant disregard for his father’s authority as head of the family.
