A CHILD'S QUESTION.
A child said "What is grass"? fetching it to me with full hands; How could I answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than he.
I guess it must be the flag of my disposition, out of hopeful green stuff woven.
Or, I guess it is the handkerchief of the Lord, a scented gift and remembrancer designedly dropt,
Bearing the owner's name someway in the corners, that we may see and remark and say, Whose? (Walt Whitman, 1819 - 1892, USA)
THIS IS A DEDICATION TO THE 7 MACCABEES, THEIR MOTHER SOLOMONIA AND ELEAZAR THE PRIEST. They suffered for the purity of the Israelite faith under Roman King Antiochus in 167 B.C.
The mother was the most amazing one of them all and she deserves a special place in our memory: "I do not know how your life began in my womb. I was not the one who gave you life and breath and put together each part of your body. It was God who did it, God who created the universe, the human race, and all that exists. He is merciful and He will give you back life and breath again, because you love His laws more than you love yourself" (II Maccabees 7:22).
