People who make a difference are themselves often different. They don't fit; they don't just go along; they stand up and stand out. Some accomplish great good; other create chaos. They are remembered both for what they did and for who they were. John the Baptist was a different person who made a differnce in the best way.
God called this John into a life as a messenger, the one who announced the arrival of the Savior Jesus Christ. He understood who He was and was single-minded in pursuing his calling. He removed himself from distructions by living in the wilderness, he wore camel skins and ate desert food. But the only trend he started was a trend of guilt. He pointed out people's sinfulness. He fearlessly called pople - the poor, the soldiers, a king - to repentance. He told them to get ready - to prepare a way for the Lord.
What difference did John the Baptist make? Did Jesus get the welcome He deserved? No. But there was a handful prepared for Christ. We know John made a difference because Jesus said so : "Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he" (Matthew 11:11).
John made a difference because he was different, he acted different, and he looked different. Most people get the order exactly reversed and wrong. They focus on looking different and acting different. You can tell who these people are because they often do this in groups. Being different takes more courage. Being different as God instructs and leads takes even more determination. It's those like John, who set out to be what God has called them to be, who end up making a difference. Have you asked God to make His calling clear to you?
