The 1st Ecumenical Council ( Nicea, 325) decided that the Liturgical/Church's year should begin on Sept 1st.
The month of September was, for the Jews, the beginning of the civil year (see Exodus 12:2), the month of gathering of fruits and the bringing to God of sacrificies of thanksgiving. It was at the time of this feast that the Lord Jesus went into the synagogue in Nazareth, opened the Book of the Prophet Isaiah and read the words:" The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord" (Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:16).
In 1947, an ancient copy of the Book of Isaiah was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Experts estimate that the scroll came from the period of 150 - 50 B.C. It is 10 inces high and 24 feet long when it is unrolled. Made of thin leather strips sewn together, the scroll is probably very similar to the one Jesus read from.
2. EARTH DAY - WORLD ON LOAN - A TEENAGER'S PRAYER
Dear Lord,
You created the environment for us to live in, the trees and grass, the blue sky and the sparkling sea.
You created it to provide homes and relationships, yet we destroy the trees, we build factories where fields should be,
we pollute the air with fumes, we dump our rubbish in the sea.
God, we have turned the planet earth into a bomb of anoter kind, a bomb every person owns.
