His point is that the way to understand happiness and unhappiness is not to think the two people live in the same worls and just have different moods.
They actually live in entirely different worlds, the difference springing from their different perceptions - one happy, the other sad.
Similarly, when someone close to you dies, the sadness wights on every moment. The cosmos greys.
Conversely, when you fall in love, the joy colours each breath.
