David allowed himself to fall deeper and deeper into sin. He abandoned his purpose by staying home from war and focused on his own desires; when temptation came, he looked into it instead of turning away from it and sinned deliberately. He tried to cover up his sin by deceiving others; he committed murder to continue the cover- up.
Nathan rebukes David. As a prophet, Nathan was required to confront sin, even the sin of a king. He presented the message with tact: “A traveler came to a rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his sheep or cattle to prepare a meal; instead, he took the ewe lamb belonged to a poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him…” Then Nathan said to David : “You are the rich man!”
David confessed and repented of his sin and wrote Psalm 50: “Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love… remove my sin, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow…”
