In 1426, when the 100 years war was in its 90th year, a French farm girl named Joan began hearing the voices of three saints, instructing her to lead the French forces. Having made an uncannily prophesy, Joan was granted an audience with the Douphin, Charles. To test her, he disguised himself, but she instantly picked him out. This was accepted as proof of her divine inspiration, and, in spite of her age and gender, she was put at the head of the French army.
Clad in white armour, Joan won great victories, and Charles was dully crowned at Rheims. When she was captured by the Burgundians, however, he did nothing to help her, and she was handed over to the English. They conspired with the Bishop of Beauvais to put her on trial for heresy - for wearing men's clothes. She was found guilty, to no one's surprise, and burnt at the stake in Rouen.
One of the most inspiring and symbolic figures in history, the Maid of Orleans was finally canonized in 1920.
