EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO SYMPTOMS, YOU STILL NEED TO PREVENT A STROKE.
Atrial fibrilation causes a part of your heart to beat with an irregular rhythm, which can result in it pumping blood less efficiently. This means that some blood can linger and pool, especially in the upper left chamber (left atrium) of the heart. When blood settles in these pools, there is a tendency for it to form blood clots. These clots usually remain in your heart and may not harm you. But if a clot breaks away, it can quickly find its way via the bloodstream to your brain. This clot can get trapped in a blood vessel and block it, which may cause a stroke.
Beeing diagnosed with atrial fibrilation can be an alarming experience. Without treatment, the risk of having a stroke is up to seven times higher than someone who doesn't have atrial fibrilation.
