În anul 874 înainte de Hristos, Ahab devine regele Israelului. Viața religioasă din Israel a atins un nivel dezastruos în timpul domniei sale de 22 de ani. El și soția sa, Iezabela din Tir, au introdus închinarea coruptă a idolului fenician Melqart (Baal), care era venerat ca un zeu al vremii.
Adevăratul Dumnezeu, Yahweh, prin profetul Ilie face o demonstrație pentru a arăta că numai El are putere asupra soarelui și a ploii. Nu a căzut rouă sau ploaie peste Israel timp de trei ani și jumătate. Dumnezeu i-a oferit hrană lui Ilie în țara lui Baal, la Sarepta, lângă Sidon, unde Ilie l-a înviat pe fiul văduvei.
După trei ani, în care Iezabela a făcut tot posibilul să elimine închinarea la Dumnezeu în Israel, Ilie se întoarce cu o provocare: idolul Baal ar trebui să poată produce foc și ploaie.
Dar idolul Baal nu exista.
Focul Domnului a coborât și a mistuit jertfa , lemnele , pietrele și praful. O ploaie torențială a căzut peste Israel (3 Regi 18).

In 874 before Christ, Ahab becomes Israel's king. Religious life in Israel reached an all-time low in his 22-years reign. He and his wife, Jesebel of Tyre, introduced the corrupt worship of the Phoenician idol Melqart (Baal), who was worshipped as a weather-god. The true God, Yahweh, through Prophet Elijah stages a demonstration to show that He alone has power over sun and rain. No dew or rain was on Israel for three and a half years. God provided food for Elijah in Baal's own country, at Zarephath near Sidon, where Elijah revived the widow's son.
After three year, in which Jezebel has done her best to eliminate the worship of God in Israel, Elijah returns with a challenge : the idol Baal should be able to produce fire and rain.
But the idol Baal was impotent.
The Lord's fire came down and consumed the holocaust, wood, stones, and dust. A heavy rain fell on Israel (1 Kings 18).
