Maria din Egipt ( 344- 1/04/421).
Dupā miraculoasa sa convertire la ușa bisericii din Ierusalim, ea petrece 47 de ani în pustie.
Dupā trecerea acelor ani, preotului Zaharia i se pare cā nu are în fațā o ființā omeneascā și-i pune o întrebare:
- "Te mai frāmîntā ispitele trupești?"
- "Se luptā cu mine ca niște fiare sālbatice!".
Relatarea aceasta crudā și realistā e lipsitā de acel nesuferit iz de moralism facil și fals de care dām în multe hagiografii.
Adevārata minune nu-i vindecarea bruscā de patimi, ci puterea de a duce lupta, biruința atît de amarnic și de înfiorātor de greu obținutā.
Iatā crestinismul adevārat, pentru adulți, altul decît al povestioarelor bune pentru cei care nu pot bea decît lapte si auzí numai dulcegārii. Pātimașii dāruiți cu darul cāinței sā știe pe ce cale îngustā și pietroasā le îngāduie Hristos sā pāșeascā. Dar și creștinii toți: sā le fie limpede ce înseamnā cu adevārat înfrîngerea, rāzboiul nevāzut, mucenicia. (Nicolae Steinhardt, Dāruind vei dobîndi).

Mary of Egypt (344- 1/04/421).
After her miraculous conversion at the door of the church in Jerusalem, she spends 47 years in the wilderness.
After the passage of those years, it seems to the priest Zacharias that he does not have a human being in front of him and he asks her a question:
- "Are you still tormented by physical temptations?"
- "They fight with me like wild beasts!".
This cruel and realistic account is devoid of that unbearable sense of facile and false moralism that we find in many hagiographies.
The real miracle is not the sudden healing of the passions, but the strength to fight, the victory so bitterly and horrifyingly difficult to obtain.
Here is the true Christianity, for adults, other than the good stories for babies who can only drink milk and hear only sweets. People gifted with the gift of repentance should know on which narrow and stony path Christ allows them to walk. But also all Christians: let it be clear to them what defeat, unseen war, martyrdom really means. (Nicolae Steinhardt, Giving you will get).
